Character House standing mode allows your customized desktop companion to stand in place and wander across your screen at intervals. In Yinengjie's desktop simulation game Character House: Desktop Companion, this layout gives your character independent movement across your open windows unless restrained by specific placement settings.

What Standing Mode Does on Your Desktop

In standing mode, your pet does not stay locked to a typing animation or confined to a screen boundary. According to the game's official description, the character "just stands there... though it does wander around from time to time."

In practice, this means the character will autonomously walk across active program windows and your desktop background. If you have multiple windows open while browsing or working, an unadjusted standing character can walk over your text fields or buttons.

How to Adjust Standing Mode Settings

Right-clicking your character while it is on the screen brings up its behavioral menu. Several key toggles dictate how standing mode interacts with your workspace:

  1. Auto walk: This toggle switches autonomous walking on or off. Turning Auto walk off stops the character from drifting across active windows, effectively locking it in a stationary standing pose where placed.
  2. Always on top: Keeps the standing character layered above every other open application.
  3. Switch monitor: Moves the standing pet from your current display to a secondary monitor.
  4. Size: Scales the pet's sprite larger or smaller to match your screen resolution or fit around application borders.
  5. Setting: Opens the character-level configuration panel for deeper behavioral and visual tweaks.
  6. Launcher and setup: Accesses the global game application configuration.
  7. Craft and Dress up: Opens menus to alter equipment, clothing, and item synthesis.

Toggling Auto walk off is the primary way to enjoy standing idle animations without the character obstructing your mouse clicks or reading material.

Moving and Scaling a Standing Character

You can reposition a standing companion at any time by clicking and dragging it to a new location. When a character is scaled down to a small size, normal left-click dragging can be tricky; right-clicking and dragging makes the pet smoothly follow your cursor instead.

On high-resolution displays, players frequently scale characters down so they can stand along the bottom margin or below the taskbar during work sessions, scaling them back up during casual downtime.

If you display multiple standing companions simultaneously, manually positioning them into a clean line can be slow. Switching all active companions into Sit-in-a-Row mode and then switching back to standing mode will automatically align them across your screen.

Managing Game and Work Conflicts

Unrestricted standing mode can cause friction when running resource-intensive software or full-screen applications. The developer addressed these issues in the September 21, 2026 update:

  • Taskbar toggle for Always on top: Running full-screen games while Always on top is active forces the desktop companion over your game screen. You can toggle Always on top directly from the Windows taskbar icon without needing to open the in-game settings panel.
  • Frame rate limits: To stop the desktop pet from competing for GPU resources during gaming or rendering, you can set the frame rate to 30 FPS, 60 FPS, or unlimited.
  • Recovering lost characters: If a roaming pet wanders off-screen or gets misplaced outside your desktop boundaries, right-click the game's taskbar icon and select the reset option to bring the character back to your visible display area.
